Introduction

A percentage off sticker rarely tells you the amount you will actually pay once tax is added at the checkout. The Discount & Tax Calculator takes an original price, a discount percentage and an optional tax rate, then shows the discounted price, the money saved, the tax amount and the final total. It runs entirely in the browser with no data sent anywhere.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Enter the Original Price of the item in the price field.
  2. Drag the Discount Off (%) slider to the advertised reduction, from 0% to 90% in 5% steps.
  3. Type the Sales Tax / VAT (%) rate in the optional tax field, or set it to 0 if no tax applies.
  4. Read the Final Pay Price in the Price Breakdown card.
  5. Check Total Money Saved, Discounted Price and Tax Amount for the full breakdown.

Key Use Cases

  • Clearance Shopping: Confirm what a 40% off item costs once VAT is added back.
  • Online Checkout Check: Verify that a store applied the discount before tax rather than after.
  • Budget Planning: Compare the final price of two items at different discount levels before buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tax applied before or after the discount?

The discount is subtracted from the original price first, and tax is then calculated on the discounted price. Final Pay Price equals discounted price plus tax amount, which matches how most retailers apply sales tax.

Can the discount slider go above 90%?

The slider stops at 90% and moves in 5% steps, so a 12% or 95% discount cannot be selected directly. The calculation itself caps the discount at 100% and ignores negative prices or tax rates.

How many decimal places are shown and which currency is used?

All four results are rounded to two decimal places. The results card shows a dollar sign, but the maths is currency-neutral, so you can enter a price in any currency and read the output in the same units.
