Introduction

Roman numerals still appear in copyright notices, clock faces, outlines and film credits, while spelled-out numbers are required on cheques and formal documents. The Roman & Words Converter takes a single whole number and outputs both representations at once, each with a copy button. The conversion runs in the browser with nothing sent to a server.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Type a whole number from 1 to 3999 in the Enter Number field.
  2. Read the Roman Numeral Representation card for the uppercase numeral.
  3. Read the English Words Representation card for the spelled-out version.
  4. Click Copy Roman Numeral to copy the numeral to the clipboard.
  5. Click Copy Words Text to copy the English phrase.

Key Use Cases

  • Copyright Footers: Convert the current year to a numeral such as MMXXVI for a site footer.
  • Cheque Writing: Spell out an amount like 2450 as Two Thousand Four Hundred Fifty.
  • Outline Numbering: Produce numerals for chapter or section headings in a document.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the valid range for Roman numerals?

Standard Roman numerals cover 1 to 3999, and the input field is limited to that range. If a value outside it is typed, the Roman card shows N/A (Range 1-3999) and the field snaps back into range when it loses focus.

Does the tool use subtractive notation?

Yes. It uses the standard subtractive pairs CM, CD, XC, XL, IX and IV, so 4 is IV rather than IIII and 1990 is MCMXC. Each numeral is built from the largest symbol values first.

How are the English words formatted?

Each word is capitalised and separated by a space, with no hyphens or the word and, so 21 becomes Twenty One and 105 becomes One Hundred Five. Zero is written as Zero, and the words logic supports values up to 999,999 even though the field caps at 3999.
